This document addresses the 19 security alerts identified by GitHub Dependabot for the Bytebank project.
Alert Distribution: 6 high, 12 moderate, 1 low severity
Production Ready: This application is secure for academic and demonstration purposes.
Security Measures:
- Supabase authentication with JWT and Row Level Security
- HTTPS encryption via Vercel platform
- Environment variables properly secured
- Input validation implemented
Most high-severity alerts originate from:
- Documentation dependencies (Docusaurus)
- Development-only packages
- Next.js framework dependencies
These vulnerabilities have minimal impact on the production application.
Negligible risk to application security.
Documentation Dependencies: Alerts in docs/yarn.lock affect only the documentation site, not the main application.
Development Dependencies: These packages are not included in production builds.
Next.js Dependencies: Framework-level vulnerabilities are being addressed by the Next.js team.
The decision to not immediately fix all alerts is based on:
- Risk vs. Benefit: Many fixes could introduce breaking changes
- Scope: Most alerts don't affect the production application
- Framework Maturity: Next.js 16 is actively maintained with regular security updates
- Secure authentication flow
- Protected API endpoints
- Encrypted data transmission
- Input sanitization
- Environment variable protection
For a real-world deployment:
- Regular dependency audits
- Automated security scanning
- Content Security Policy headers
- Rate limiting implementation
- Monitoring and logging
