Neoliberalism: the idea that swallowed the world

Wings of Desire

When the child was a child, it was the time of these questions. Why am I me, and why not you? Why am I here, and why not there? When did time begin, and where does space end? Isn't life under the sun just a dream? Isn't what I see, hear, and smell just the mirage of a world before the world? Does evil actually exist, and are there people who are really evil? How can it be that I, who am I, wasn't before I was, and that sometime I, the one I am, no longer will be the one I am?

Where do pro-social institutions come from?

Intelligence and patience allow you to understand, and weigh, the intuitive risks and the counterintuitive benefits from collaborating with perfect strangers. With less intelligence and less patience you stick to what you know — intuit the benefits from relationships cultivated over a long time through blood ties or other intimate affiliations. Your "moral circle" is wider with intelligence and patience than without.

Designing Data-Intensive Applications

If we want the future to be better than the past, moral imagination is required, and that’s something only humans can provide. Data and models should be our tools, not our masters.

I touch myself (original)
What will never be

Since I'm just a boy in school, I asked my teacher: "What shall I try, should I paint pictures, should I sing songs?". There was no reply.

Aphex Twin - Stone In Focus

Old-man monkey. You can tell by his arched eyebrows and fixed frown, he’s seen some shit. The kind you can’t repeat to younger monkeys. He just wants to relax but his nightmares will wake him from time to time. His monkey wife left him ages ago and now he simply drifts with clan. Yeah, he’s a drifter, possibly a scurve, but at least he’s warm. Memories will keep you warm, but they’ll burn you from within. He knows this too well.

Solaris

Solaris review

What gave you this idea of an imperfect god? I don't know. It seems quite feasible to me. That is the only god I could imagine believing in, a god whose passion is not a redemption, who saves nothing, fulfills no purpose--a god who simply is.

Europa

In the morning, the sleeper has found rest on the bottom of the river. The force of the stream has opened the door and is leading you on. Above your body, people are still alive. Follow the river as days go by. Head for the ocean that mirrors the sky. You want to wake up to free yourself of the image of Europa. But it is not possible...

Jodorowsky's Dune

This system make of us slaves. Without dignity. WIthout depth. With a devil in our pocket. This, this incredible money are in the pocket. This money. This shit. This nothing. This paper who have nothing inside. Movies have heart. Boom-boom-boom. Have mind. Have power. Have ambition. I wanted to do something like that. Why not?

"AI": what’s in a name?

We are like sailors who on the open sea must reconstruct their ship but are never able to start afresh from the bottom. Where a beam is taken away a new one must at once be put there, and for this the rest of the ship is used as support. In this way, by using the old beams and driftwood the ship can be shaped entirely anew, but only by gradual reconstruction...

Going from Good to Great with Complex Tasks

A centipede was happy – quite!
Until a toad in fun
Said, "Pray, which leg moves after which?"
This raised her doubts to such a pitch,
She fell exhausted in the ditch
Not knowing how to run.

Peter Van Hoesen & Gabi Sultana jouent John Cage

Gabi Sultana - DM City Gent

As a teenager I was very influenced by Aphex Twin. Nowadays my list of current favorite electronic artists would have to include Alva Noto, Autechre and Sendai (Peter Van Hoesen and Yves De Mey). There are many reasons why I pick these three , but the common factor is their detail in sound. I find that fascinating. And I should also mention Shackleton because of his unique and recognizable sound. ```

The art of DJing: Jane Fitz

When I hear a record, I still get so excited by a particular sound. There will be a bit in a record, it could be a drum break or a synth sound or an arp, it could be space in the record, there will be that one bit of every record where I'm like, "Yesss!!!" And when you're having that moment, and you can see someone else having the exact same response to the same part of the record that you are... You're so excited! It's this confirmation that you are having a connection with people, and you can read their mind and they can read your mind... I don't know what it is, it's just a buzz. Having that instant connection about some weird bit in a record, that's the thing that drives everything, it's like, "Wow, you really heard what I heard, that's so nice, because I'm really excited by this, and it's so nice that somebody else is really excited by this as well." Then I feel like I've done my job. You hear what I hear.

Random Factor - Broken Mirror

In a broken mirror
There are many things reflected
It's one mistake
That cannot be corrected

So now you feel
There are many things connected
And moves you make
Will somehow be detected

In a future time
Where we will be projected
For words they fake
Will never be suspected

We hear the sound
Of sureness's reflected
And when we wake
Expect the unexpected

Plavi Mag

Blade Runner

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time...like tears in rain. Time to die.

Ghost in the Shell

If we all reacted the same way, we’d be predictable, and there’s always more than one way to view a situation. What’s true for the group is also true for the individual. It’s simple: overspecialize, and you breed in weakness. It’s slow death.
