What this is. A public, plain-Markdown knowledge base describing who the Valdosta Amateur Radio Club (VARC) is, the services we provide to our members and community, and the public-service work we do alongside other organizations. It is structured as an Obsidian-compatible vault — open the folder in Obsidian for a linked, navigable graph, or browse it right here on GitHub.

Who we are, in one paragraph

VARC is an all-volunteer, nonprofit amateur radio club that has served the Valdosta / Lowndes County area of South Georgia for nearly a century. Our members operate a network of open FM and D-STAR repeaters, provide trained severe-weather spotting to the National Weather Service, run a public camera network, and help build and operate HamWAN South Georgia — a high-speed emergency-communications data backbone for public safety. We also teach and license new operators through free classes and volunteer exam sessions.

Why this repository exists

Two reasons:

  1. A durable public reference for anyone curious about the club — prospective members, served agencies, journalists, and fellow hams.
  2. A companion to a Claude Code grant application. VARC is a small, unfunded, all-volunteer nonprofit that nonetheless builds and operates real infrastructure — a billed membership platform, automated weather alerting, repeater automation, and an emergency-comms network. AI-assisted development is how a handful of volunteers punch far above their weight. See How We Use AI for the full story. This knowledge base itself was assembled with the help of Claude Code.

Public information only

Everything here is deliberately public. Operational secrets — credentials, node numbers, internal IP addresses, member data, and system internals — are intentionally excluded. See the Public Information Policy.

Statements we could not confirm from a public source are tagged [VERIFY]; a running list lives in the Verification Checklist for club officers to confirm.
