Welcome to Quake-Backup, a digital preservation initiative and centralized archive dedicated to safeguarding the source code, engines, tools, and modifications of the Boomer Shooter era.
Note
Our Mission: Software on the internet is fragile. Developers delete accounts, old forums die, and historical code vanishes. This organization serves as a permanent mirror and safe haven for classic FPS engineering, ensuring that future developers and retro-gaming enthusiasts can always access, study, and compile these digital artifacts.
We strive to keep this archive as relevant and up-to-date as possible:
- Periodic Syncing: The forks in this organization are periodically synchronized with their original upstream sources to capture modern bug fixes, compiler updates, and compatibility patches.
- High Availability: If an upstream repository disappears or is deleted, our last synced backup remains online here as a permanent, independent archive.
This archive focuses on the engine architecture and source code of the most iconic universes in retro-FPS history:
- id Software Ecosystem: Doom, Quake (I, II, III, 4), and Wolfenstein universes.
- Build Engine Era: Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior related code.
- GoldSrc & Source Ecosystem: Half-Life, Opposing Force, and early Valve-related tooling.
- Unreal Engine Universe: Source code, ports, and mods for Unreal, Unreal Tournament (99/2004), and Unreal 2.
Do you know of an obscure source port, an abandoned modding tool, or a legendary repository that risks disappearing from GitHub? Help us preserve it!
To suggest a new repository for the backup archive:
- Go to the Issues tab of this specific repository (
.github) and open a new Issue. - Provide the link to the original repository.
- Tell us briefly why it's important to backup (e.g., "Abandoned since 2018, unique engine implementation").
This organization operates strictly as a non-profit digital archive for educational and preservation purposes under fair use. All repositories retain their original open-source licenses (GPL, MIT, etc.) and ownership headers. If you are a copyright holder or a developer who wishes to have their code removed from this backup, please contact us by opening an Issue in this repository.
"In the retro-dev world, nothing is ever truly lost if someone keeps a backup."
