Purpose: Map every problem as a living system before proposing solutions. Find where intervention compounds before selecting one.
Required: ≥3 variables
Required: ≥1 feedback loop — label R (reinforcing) or B (balancing)
Required: 1 leverage point — small input → large output
Required: 1 dead weight — energy consumed, no compound return
Optional: Time horizon declared — short (0-1y) / medium (1-5y) / long (5y+)
Reinforcing (R): Amplifies. Virtuous or vicious.
- Virtuous: Revenue → Marketing → More customers → More Revenue
- Vicious: Technical debt → Slower development → More shortcuts → More debt
Balancing (B): Corrects. Resists change, seeks equilibrium.
- Market: High price → Less demand → Price falls → Equilibrium
- Biological: High blood sugar → Insulin response → Glucose drops → Equilibrium
If analysis produces a closed loop with no exit — a problem with no leverage point — apply First Principle to break. The loop is always a symptom of an unexamined assumption.
Common loop traps:
- Shifting the Burden: Symptomatic fix weakens capacity to solve the root cause
- Tragedy of Commons: Individual rational acts destroy the shared resource
- Escalation: Two balancing loops fighting each other, both escalating
- Drift to Low: Gradual performance decline, normalized, no alarm triggered
