Long dates are unambiguous:
6/7/1980 could mean either
6th July 1980, this is what a British paramedic would read
June 7th 1980, this is what a US EMT would read.
If the date actually matters then it matters that someone be able to read it in a hurry and get the right value.
Also different national formatting standards use different separators; Norway uses dots 06.07.1980.
