Registration unavailable: request for academic API token or offline model access #749

Description

Hello DeepCell team,

I am Bo Cheng, Professor at the School of Life Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University. My lab works mainly in mechanobiology, and we are evaluating DeepCell-related segmentation workflows for academic, non-commercial microscopy image analysis.

The documented API-key route points to https://users.deepcell.org/login/ and requires a DEEPCELL_ACCESS_TOKEN, but the registration/login flow is currently unavailable for us. I also noticed several related open issues: #694, #741, #745, and #748.

Could you please advise on the recommended path for academic users?

  1. Is users.deepcell.org registration still supported, and if so, how should new academic users obtain a token?
  2. If registration is temporarily broken, can an API token be issued manually for academic/non-commercial use?
  3. If public token issuance is no longer maintained, is there an offline model/checkpoint download route or a recommended replacement workflow for local inference?

Our immediate use case is segmentation of microscopy images in a local workflow. We would prefer offline/local inference if an appropriate model access route is available.

Thank you for your help.
