FYI, there's also OpenCPU, which is very solid and might fit what you need:

I haven't installed it myself, but heard lots of good stuff about it, I know Jeroen (https://twitter.com/opencpu) and have great trust in him. He's also very active developer in R and have done stuff about security etc. Several R packages on CRAN exists because of OpenCPU, e.g. jsonlite, curl, V8, mongolite, openssl, ... (see https://github.com/jeroen/ and https://r-pkg.org/maint/jeroen@berkeley.edu)

I suggests looking into that one. I'd be happy to also learn about it myself - has potentials but never had time to dive into it.

Definitely a cool and relevant piece of software. At first glance I think the main difference between this and Rook would be that in this case I would get the JSON api for free. I am assuming I can expose my own custom packages, where I can put any endpoint functions I would like. It would be nice to be able to define the JSON transport format, so I don't have to speak in two different JSON formats or write openCPU-specific JSON adapters. All things to look into...
