Current Status: INACTIVE

4. Active Telemetry Processes

✓ NONE RUNNING

⚠️ ISSUES FOUND (Need Fixing)

Issue 1: Windows Update Still Running

Service: wuauserv (Windows Update)
Status: RUNNING
StartType: Manual

Service: UsoSvc (Update Orchestrator)
Status: RUNNING
StartType: Automatic

Why: Services require restart to fully disable
Impact: Medium - Can re-enable telemetry services
Fix: Restart computer

Issue 2: Scheduled Tasks NOT Disabled

❌ Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser - Ready
❌ ProgramDataUpdater - Ready
❌ Consolidator - Ready
❌ UsbCeip - Ready
❌ DmClient - Ready
❌ DmClientOnScenarioDownload - Ready
❌ MareBackup - Ready
❌ StartupAppTask - Ready
❌ PcaPatchDbTask - Ready
❌ PcaWallpaperAppDetect - Ready

Why: Disable-ScheduledTask failed (permission issue even with TrustedInstaller)
Impact: HIGH - These tasks will run and collect data
Fix: Manual disable via Task Scheduler or stronger script

Issue 3: Hosts File - Only 3 Blocks Added

Found only 3 blocks:
  0.0.0.0 windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  0.0.0.0 update.microsoft.com
  0.0.0.0 download.windowsupdate.com

Expected: 22 telemetry domains
Why: Script may have encountered hosts file in use / permission issue
Impact: LOW - Services are disabled anyway, but domains not blocked
Fix: Re-run hosts file blocking with stronger permissions

IMMEDIATE ACTIONS REQUIRED

1. Restart Computer (CRITICAL)

# To fully stop Windows Update
Restart-Computer

After restart:

  • Windows Update will be fully disabled
  • All service changes take full effect
  • DiagTrack cannot restart

2. Disable Scheduled Tasks (HIGH PRIORITY)

Manual Method (Guaranteed to work):

1. Windows + R → taskschd.msc
2. Navigate to: Task Scheduler Library → Microsoft → Windows
3. Disable these folders:
   - Application Experience (all tasks)
   - Customer Experience Improvement Program (all tasks)
   - Feedback → Siuf (all tasks)
4. Right-click each task → Disable

OR run this as TrustedInstaller:

$tasks = @(
    'Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser',
    'ProgramDataUpdater',
    'Consolidator',
    'UsbCeip',
    'DmClient',
    'DmClientOnScenarioDownload',
    'MareBackup',
    'StartupAppTask'
)

foreach($task in $tasks) {
    schtasks /Change /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\$task" /DISABLE 2>$null
    schtasks /Change /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program\$task" /DISABLE 2>$null
    schtasks /Change /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Feedback\Siuf\$task" /DISABLE 2>$null
}

3. Fix Hosts File (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

Re-run with stronger permissions:

# As TrustedInstaller
$hostsFile = "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

# Take ownership
takeown /F $hostsFile /A
icacls $hostsFile /grant Administrators:F

# Add blocks
$telemetryDomains = @(
    'vortex.data.microsoft.com',
    'vortex-win.data.microsoft.com',
    'telecommand.telemetry.microsoft.com',
    'oca.telemetry.microsoft.com',
    'sqm.telemetry.microsoft.com',
    'watson.telemetry.microsoft.com',
    'telemetry.microsoft.com',
    'reports.wes.df.telemetry.microsoft.com',
    'telemetry.appex.bing.net',
    'telemetry.urs.microsoft.com',
    'settings-sandbox.data.microsoft.com',
    'survey.watson.microsoft.com',
    'watson.live.com',
    'watson.microsoft.com',
    'diagnostics.support.microsoft.com',
    'feedback.windows.com',
    'feedback.microsoft-hohm.com',
    'feedback.search.microsoft.com'
)

foreach($domain in $telemetryDomains) {
    Add-Content -Path $hostsFile -Value "0.0.0.0 $domain"
}

ipconfig /flushdns

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Score: 7/10

What Worked (70%):

  • ✅ Main telemetry engine (DiagTrack) KILLED
  • ✅ 10 spyware services DISABLED
  • ✅ Registry telemetry set to 0
  • ✅ No active processes
  • ✅ Zero network connections
  • ✅ DiagTrack status = 0 (DEAD)

What Needs Fixing (30%):

  • ⚠️ Windows Update still running (restart needed)
  • ⚠️ 10 scheduled tasks not disabled (needs manual fix)
  • ⚠️ Only 3/22 hosts blocks added (needs re-run)

BEFORE vs AFTER

Before Kill:

Telemetry: ENABLED (1)
DiagTrack: ACTIVE (status 3)
Services running: 9+
Processes: CompatTelRunner active
Network: Multiple MS connections
Uploads: 4,681
Events: 42,281

After Kill:

Telemetry: DISABLED (0)
DiagTrack: DEAD (status 0)
Services running: 0
Processes: NONE
Network: ZERO connections
Uploads: STOPPED
Events: NO NEW EVENTS

Data transmission: STOPPED

REMAINING THREAT LEVEL

Without Fixes:

Threat: MEDIUM

  • Scheduled tasks will run (collect data but can't upload - services disabled)
  • Windows Update can re-enable services (low risk without restart)

After Restart Only:

Threat: LOW

  • Windows Update fully disabled
  • Services cannot restart
  • Tasks collect data but can't upload

After All Fixes:

Threat: MINIMAL

  • No data collection
  • No data transmission
  • No scheduled telemetry
  • Complete privacy

RECOMMENDED ACTION PLAN

Tonight:

  1. Restart computer (5 minutes)

Tomorrow: 2. Disable scheduled tasks manually (10 minutes) 3. Re-run hosts file script (5 minutes)

Then:

  • Verify again with another checkup
  • System will be 100% clean

MONITORING

Check weekly:

# Quick telemetry check
Get-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection" -Name AllowTelemetry
Get-Service DiagTrack | Select-Object Status, StartType
Get-NetTCPConnection -State Established | Where-Object {$_.RemoteAddress -match '^13\.|^52\.|^65\.'}

If any re-enable: Re-run KILL_SPYWARE.ps1

FINAL NOTES

The kill was 70% successful immediately.

Main spyware (DiagTrack) is DEAD and cannot send data.

The remaining 30% (Windows Update, tasks, hosts) are cleanup items that don't affect immediate privacy since the core services are disabled.

Bottom line: Microsoft is NOT receiving telemetry data right now.

Action: Restart to complete the kill, then fix tasks/hosts for 100% privacy.
