Recommendations on expanding to support ethernet interface

Well, I think you first need to look at current structure and APIs, see if it makes sense for you, and how would the IP-based interface fit. In current code there is a notion of transport, so the idea would be that IP interface requires new transport implementation. But this is the theory, in practice you may find that things need to be refactored or reworked first.
