can't start Avatar-Maker on Linux Mint v23.2

I installed the app (including npm) as instructed by the readme.md.
After changing to the directory .../Avatar-Maker/Avatar-Maker I'm trying to start the apps through npm start serve.
The apps doesn't start and I'm receiving the following messages:

Am I doing something wrong here?
Any ideas to resolve the problem?
