Sometimes difficulty spikes due to someone mining on testnet with an ASIC or something. This pushes the difficulty much higher than normal and beyond what the normal CPU-based miners can match. Once the high-powered miner drops off, it appears that the chain stalls for ~2 hrs until testnet block production rules allow continuing with lower difficulty. It would be nice if the dashboard displayed a message when difficulty spikes like this so people aren't scrambling to identify an issue when there really isn't one.
