FeatureRequest: Show Lables for BrowserProfiles permanently, rather than numbers and mous-over

Currently, when the Picker is invoked with several profiles configured for one browser (in my case 7 Edge profiles), each profile only shows its icon/avatar. The profile name only appears as a tooltip on hover, one at a time.

With larger profile sets (6+ profiles under one browser), this makes it hard to scan quickly and pick the right one at a glance — you either have to memorize icon/color combinations, or hover over each one individually to confirm the name before clicking.

Request: Add an option (e.g. picker.show_labels: true) to render the profile name as a persistent text label under (or beside) each icon in the picker, rather than only on hover. Ideally togglable independently of show_key_hints, since some users may want numbers only, labels only, or both.

Use case: I use Browser Tamer to switch between multiple Edge profiles - I've set custom icons and color swatches per profile to help distinguish them, but a persistent name label would remove the need to hover-check before every click, especially when quickly switching between similar icon choices.

Happy to test a build if this is something you're open to adding.

Hi, I've been toying with this idea for a while now, but I think the current picker design will have to change to accommodate this. Profile names can be very short or very long unlike icons which have equal length. If I cut labels picker looks ugly. If I display the entire label, the space between icons varies and that also looks ugly.

So, to do what you want it may make more sense to list icons vertically and display labels horizontally – they would each use their own layout. Any ideas are welcome.

I was using a different tool before (but I like BT´s profile detection a lot more — not to mention the ton of additional options).

From a UI perspective, that tool had two features I really liked:

1. Profile names

2. Automated line breaks

3. The actual feature request here: maybe you could add a "Display Name" in addition to the actual profile name (for cases where I don't want it auto-cut). It could have a fixed max length, with a mouseover still showing the full profile name. This would make selecting profiles a lot more convenient, in my opinion.

4. The automated line break ties directly into this "fixed length" idea. With it, I could make the selector window as wide and tall as I like without being forced to deal with scrollbars (though I could still use them if I wanted).

Here's how it would look arranged vertically, just by adjusting the window size:

I'd love to see this feature as well - I have many profiles for the same browser making it hard to know which one is which at a quick glance of just the icon.

I like the idea of a vertical list instead of the current horizontal list.

As a quick fix, perhaps you could do a new short name label to display under the icon in the current horizontal list. Short in that it would only show a fixed # of characters that you know will fit in the available space (e.g., 6 characters, 8 characters, etc.)? Or it could be just be the curent description field but only showing the first x characters?

Just playing with an early draft (see below). Labels overlap with default sizing which I'm still not happy with. You can make icons bigger, or labels smaller of course, but I'm not sure yet.

Does the "padding" adjustment increase the amount of space between the icons (and the amount of space available for the label)?

FWIW, the way I would probably use this is to use shortened meaningful names for my profile names so that they fit in whatever space is available.

On that note, if you aren't liking how the labels overlap if they are too long, could you implement wrapping so that the labels only get so wide then wrap the text to the next line?

i think i would try to "fence" icon and text so that the text would not overlap with the next one

Right now each label is probably drawn with just centered text, no max-width. It needs a hard max-width equal to that icon's column (icon width + padding on each side), with clipping:

label.max_width = icon_width + 2 * padding
label.text_overflow = ellipsis // or clip
label.white_space = nowrap

That alone stops any font-size setting from causing bleed into the neighbor, regardless of drift.

Thanks, makes sense. I was just looking at the Windows 11 start menu. So they have quite a bit of spacing between icons, and I can't see any issues for all but one title – "calibre..." which wraps to next line and is trimmed with ellipsis. This looks OK, and works just fine if you want icons to wrap to next line (start menu fits max of 8 icons per row, and there can be max 3 rows). I could then make area scrollable vertically if there are too many icons.

Looks good to me... especially the multirow functionalityv when you have many browser profiles
