auto: Z.ai powers up 1 gigawatt on all-Chinese chips, sovereignty catch got answered on hardware (#120)
Bloomberg reported on Monday, July 20, 2026 that Z.ai (the former Zhipu) finished a 1 gigawatt AI data center and switched part of it on, with every chip in the building sourced from a Chinese fab and multiple 10K-chip clusters running with zero Nvidia silicon. Read against Bloomberg's revenue leak from three days earlier (Z.ai on track for $1B ARR, already booked the full-year 2026 sales target in July, 15x growth from January) the story is not a Nvidia-loses headline. It is that the Chinese frontier stack just closed on the training side, on top of the API/weights side we covered in June for GLM-5.2, and it is doing so as a self-funding lab. Before the launch, Bridgewater Associates and Thinking Machines ran a joint project on Tinker: fine-tune an open model against the hedge fund's financial reasoning corpus, then score the specialist on a financial reasoning suite. It scored 84.7 percent ahead of every top proprietary AI on the same test at roughly one fourteenth the inference cost.
