I was wondering about the database design of an inventory system. Let's say you want to store the data of the products of a store, how can we store the current quantity of a product, or do we run aggregated queries?

This is a tough one! Anyone have an idea on how we can make this work?

Elastic Search is good for text search and aggregations. But can it handle lots of updates?

Wouldn't you want transactional writes here?

I would want a high isolation level here, something like Repeatable Read.

Would read committed with optimistic concurrency control work here?

Decrement quantity by 1 where quantity > 0 etc?

Could you describe a bit more what is your main concern -> concurrency safety or any other etc?

@BackAged My main concern would be concurrency, but not to the point that I have to make all transactions serializable.

In the worst case, I can cancel the order after booking and apologize for the inconvenience. Something like the SAGA pattern would be worth looking into.
