Lock screen not appering after reboot

Bug description

When I lock the screen, ether with the power button on the start menu or using a shortcut that i setup it goes to the lock screen prompting me to "log in" then after rebooting it, it bypasses the lock screen which i had just been on before powering off and on again. in other words when i turn it back on after reboot it goes straight into the desktop and allows me to use apps like normal and everything

Steps to reproduce

none known but i also have an Ubuntu laptop and it does the same thing

go the the lock screen not the desktop

both the devices that this happens to are laptops. One is an HP and the other one is an Microsoft surface laptop
i also have one last laptop that this doesn't happen to but it takes a long time to boot it is also older but on the same version of mint as the first

This sounds like LightDM autologin being enabled rather than a Cinnamon bug — cinnamon and cinnamon-screensaver only start after the display manager has already let you into a session, so they can't gate boot-time access. Whatever lets a user straight into the desktop on boot is in LightDM's config.

Could you check on an affected machine:

sudo grep -RIn 'autologin' /etc/lightdm/

If you see a line like autologin-user=<your-username> in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf or a file under /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/, that is why the login screen is skipped after reboot. To turn it off:

• GUI: Menu → Login Window → Users tab → "Automatic login" = Off, or
• Edit the file, remove the autologin-user= and autologin-user-timeout= lines, then sudo systemctl restart lightdm (this will log you out — save your work first).

The fact that the same thing happens on your Ubuntu laptop is consistent with autologin being on there too — both installers offer it as a checkbox during install.

If autologin is already off and it still bypasses the login screen, please share /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf plus any lightdm.conf.d/*.conf files, and journalctl -b -u lightdm from a boot where it skipped login — at that point it's a real bug worth digging into.
