This module shows you how to create service orders and support requests for Surface devices using the appropriate portal and how to track request status in the correct portal.
2+
3+
## Learning objectives
4+
5+
- Determine when a service order is required and select the correct Surface portal based on device enrollment.
6+
- Submit required service information and distinguish between service and support scenarios.
7+
- Create a support request in the correct portal.
8+
- Identify where service requests are tracked.
9+
- Review service and support status indicators and determine next actions based on status.

Create a service order when a Surface device requires:
2+
3+
- Physical repair
4+
- Hardware replacement
5+
- Exchange due to device failure
6+
7+
To get started, you must first determine the correct starting portal.
8+
9+
## Step 1: Determine the correct starting portal
10+
11+
Where you start to create a service order depends on device enrollment:
12+
13+
- **Surface Management Portal** ➡️ Use if your organization has an Intune subscription. You can create service orders for both enrolled and unenrolled Surface devices directly from Surface Management Portal.
14+
- **Surface Support Portal** ➡️ Use if your organization doesn't have an Intune license. Surface Support Portal is required to create service orders when Intune isn't available.
15+
16+
If starting in Surface Management Portal:
17+
18+
- In the Microsoft Intune Admin Center, navigate to **Devices > All devices**.
19+
- Select the enrolled Surface device.
20+
- Open its **Device details** page.
21+
- Initiate the service action directly from the enrolled device's details in Intune.
22+
23+
If starting in Surface Support Portal:
24+
25+
- Navigate directly to service order creation.
26+
- Enter device details manually.
27+
28+
## Step 2: Provide required information
29+
30+
When prompted for required information, you'll need to provide the following:
31+
32+
- Device serial number
33+
- Description of the issue
34+
- Shipping and contact details
35+
36+
>[!IMPORTANT]
37+
> Regardless of which Surface portal a request is initiated in, it can be tracked in either Surface Support Portal or Surface Management Portal.
